Frequently Asked Questions

  The Product

Is Hemswell Crystal real crystal?

Yes. Our glasses are made from lead-free crystalline — a material with the same refractive brilliance and acoustic ring as traditional lead crystal, but without lead oxide. The technical term is "crystalline glass" and it exceeds the optical threshold that defines crystal.

What is the difference between crystal and crystalline?

Traditional crystal contains at least 24% lead oxide by weight. Crystalline (sometimes called "lead-free crystal") replaces the lead with barium or zinc oxide to achieve the same optical properties. Both produce the brilliance, weight, and acoustic ring associated with fine glassware. Crystalline is stronger, safer, and allows for a finer rim.

Are the glasses hand-cut?

Yes. The Wicklow pattern on every glass is cut by hand using traditional techniques. No two glasses are perfectly identical — this is a hallmark of genuine hand-cut crystal and a mark of authenticity, not a defect.

What is the capacity of the glasses?

Whisky tumblers hold approximately 300ml. Brandy snifters hold approximately 250ml. Exact dimensions and capacities are listed on each product page.

  Care

Can I put them in the dishwasher?

We recommend hand washing. Dishwasher detergent is alkaline and mildly abrasive — designed for ceramics and steel, not crystalline glass. One cycle will not ruin them. Repeated cycles will gradually cloud the surface. Hand washing in warm soapy water takes thirty seconds and preserves the brilliance indefinitely. See our Care Guide for full details.

My glasses have gone cloudy. Can I fix this?

Usually, yes. Cloudiness is typically caused by mineral deposits from hard water or dishwasher use. Soak the glass in one part white vinegar to three parts warm water for 15 minutes, then rinse and dry with a polishing cloth. For stubborn marks, a small amount of lemon juice applied with a soft cloth often works. Full instructions are in our Care Guide.

How should I store the glasses?

Upright, with space between them. Never stack glasses inside each other — the rims and cut edges will chip. The presentation box with its satin lining is designed for long-term storage as well as gifting.
